The thyroid is a gland in the neck. It is recognisable by its butterfly shape and it sits just in front of the windpipe. This gland is responsible for producing hormones that can affect many bodily functions such as your heart rate and body temperature. What is Thyroid Health?

Your thyroid should produce hormones that help your body to function correctly. Sometimes, your thyroid can be underactive and sometimes overactive. These conditions are called hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Anyone can develop these conditions; however, it is ten times more likely for women to experience hyperthyroidism than men and similar for hypothyroidism.

With the former, common symptoms tend to include:

  • Tiredness
  • Being sensitive to cold
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry skin
  • And more

On the other hand, hyperthyroidism can offer symptoms such as:

  • Nervousness and anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to heat
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • And more

Most cases of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are mostly caused by an autoimmune response. With the latter, this is often due to a condition called Graves’ disease. It is not entirely known why this immune response happens; however, some studies have shown that smoking can raise your risk.

Thyroid Health Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below answers to frequently asked questions we get from our clients regarding Thyroid Health:

How are thyroid problems diagnosed?

Usually, thyroid issues are tested initially by using a thyroid function blood test. This will search for multiple functionalities including the hormones TSH, T4 and T3. A high level of TSH with a low of T4 can indicate an underactive thyroid. Similarly a low level of TSH and high levels of T3 and T4 may indicate an overactive thyroid.

What are the complications of hypothyroidism?

The consequences of an untreated underactive thyroid can be extremely severe. High cholesterol can build up in your blood, blocking your arteries and potentially causing life-threatening heart problems such as cardiovascular disease. This is why it vital that you get checked if you feel that you may have symptoms.

What are the complications of hyperthyroidism?

One common problem with an overactive thyroid is that it may affect your eyes. A lot of cases are mild and can get better; however, around 1 in 25 cases result in a loss of vision. Sometimes, when being treated for hyperthyroidism, your medication can result in the opposite problem and leaving you with hypothyroidism. This may present symptoms such as sensitivity to the cold, tiredness and weight gain.

What happens to my eyes during hyperthyroidism?

Relatively often, when experiencing hyperthyroidism, you may also develop thyroid eye disease. This may affect around 1 in 3 people with an overactive thyroid caused by Graves’ disease. The eye problems that occur may present symptoms such as:

  • Dry or gritty eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eyes watering
  • Blurred vision
  • Red and swollen eyes
  • And more
