What is Mental Wellbeing?

Mental health is a state of emotional and behavioural wellbeing. It is about improving your wellness and quality of life by addressing factors that can influence how you feel and behave. Let’s face it, we all want to live happier healthier lives and that doesn’t mean that everything is about your physical health (although your physical health plays an important role in your mental health). Your mental health plays a significant role in your overall health and quality of life.

Stress, depression, anxiety, mood disorders and addiction can significantly impact the lives and wellbeing of those affected including their relationships, social and physical health. Therefore, it is important to understand if you may be affected by a mental health issue. Determining whether a mental illness is affecting you can be difficult since it may not be so obvious to you. Some of the signs of mental illness include:

  • Feeling sad or down, especially over a long period of time.
  • Suicidal thoughts.
  • Feelings of uselessness or incompetence towards yourself.
  • Confused thinking and/or reduced ability to concentrate.
  • Excessive fears or worries.
  • Strong feelings of guilt.
  • Extreme mood swings of highs and lows.
  • Withdrawal from friends and social activities.
  • Fatigue, low energy levels and/or problems sleeping.
  • Thoughts that may be detached from reality (delusions), paranoia and/or hallucinations.
  • Trouble dealing with daily problems or stress.
  • Trouble understanding and relating to people and their situations.
  • Such as alcohol or drug use.
  • Major changes in eating habits.
  • Changes in sex drive.
  • Feelings and behaviours associated with anger, hostility and/or violence.

What are some of the causes of mental illness?

In general, mental illnesses are thought to be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors including:

  • Family history. It does not mean that it will affect you however, certain stressful events may trigger mental illness.
  • Environmental exposures before birth. If your mother was exposed to environmental stressors, such as inflammatory conditions, toxins, alcohol or drugs, while you were in the womb, you may be at increased risk of certain mental illnesses.
  • Brain chemistry. An imbalance in chemicals in the brain
  • Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring brain chemicals that carry signals to other parts of your brain and body. When the neural networks involving these chemicals are impaired, the function of nerve receptors and nerve systems change, leading to depression and other emotional disorders.
How can I prevent mental illness?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent mental illness however, there are a few steps that you can take to reduce the symptoms and better manage them. These include managing stress more effectively, paying attention to any of the warning signs, self-reflection, checking on your friends and opening up discussion about it, checking in with a doctor and getting the right treatment when you need it. Additionally, looking after your physical and social health is also very important. Interacting with others, engaging in social activities, getting enough sleep, regular physical activity and a healthy diet all contribute to your overall health.
