Your mental health plays a significant role in your overall health and quality of life.

Stress, depression, anxiety, mood disorders and addiction can significantly impact the lives and wellbeing of those affected including their relationships, social and physical health. Therefore, it is important to understand if you may be affected by a mental health issue. Determining whether a mental illness is affecting you can be difficult since it may not be so obvious to you. In general, mental illnesses are thought to be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors including:

  • Family history. It does not mean that it will affect you however, certain stressful events may trigger mental illness.

There is no guaranteed way to prevent mental illness however, there are a few steps that you can take to reduce the symptoms and better manage them. These include managing stress more effectively, paying attention to any of the warning signs, self-reflection, checking on your friends and opening up discussion about it, checking in with a doctor and getting the right treatment when you need it.
