What is Menopause?

Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 60 and is categorised when women stop having their periods, marking a stage in their life when they can no longer give birth. As oestrogen levels drop when a woman experiences menopause, symptoms may occur. These include hot flushes, night sweats, muscle and joint aches, tender breasts and emotional changes.

Leading up to menopause, hormone levels can swing from high to low as the body transitions. There is no specific test to determine whether or not you are menopausal, however, you may be able to determine if you are menopausal based on your age, the frequency of your periods and if you are experiencing any symptoms. Many women experience menopause early (before they reach 45 years of age) so it may be worth talking to your doctor to determine if you may be menopausal as well as treatments to ease the symptoms.

Menopause Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below answers to frequently asked questions we get from our clients regarding Menopause:

What are the three stages of menopause?

The three stages of menopause are perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause. Hormones begin to decline, and menstrual cycles become erratic and irregular. Symptoms may include hot flashes or vaginal dryness.

Menopause reaches a stage when you stop producing the hormones that cause your period. After 12 months of experiencing no period, you enter postmenopause. Postmenopause is a stage in your life simply after menopause has occurred. Women in postmenopause have an increased risk for certain health conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease. So, it is important to maintain healthy diets and lifestyle choices to improve your overall health, wellbeing and quality of life.

What is the average age of menopause?

Most women go through menopause around the age of 51. Although, generally the window to go through menopause is between the ages of 45 and 60. Nevertheless, many women still experience menopause outside these ages. You should speak to your doctor if unsure as they will be able to help you with managing the symptoms.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Most people in postmenopause may also experience some of the symptoms from menopause although they should be less intense. These symptoms are caused by low levels of reproductive hormones and may include:

  • Hot flashes.
  • Weight gain or changes.
  • Night sweats.
  • Vaginal dryness and sexual discomfort.
  • Vaginal itching.
  • Changes in sex drive.
  • Mood swings and irritability.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Dry skin.
  • Hair loss.
  • Urinary incontinence.
Why does menopause occur?

Menopause occurs as the ovaries age and produce less reproductive hormones including:

  • Oestrogen
  • progesterone
  • testosterone
  • follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • luteinizing hormone (LH)
