What is Food and Chemical Sensitivities?

As mentioned previously, food and chemical sensitivities do not cause severe allergic reactions. This is because a food intolerance does not involve the immune system and will not cause an immune reaction like anaphylaxis. The food intolerance may occur due to the chemicals found either naturally in food or by chemicals that have been added to certain foods.

It is possible to find the root cause of the reaction by eliminating other foods from your diet for a certain amount of time to see which is causing the problem. Food intolerances have many symptoms from hives and swelling to stomach upsets. Some food intolerances could even cause breathing problems.

It is important to understand that the intolerance comes from a reaction to the chemicals within the food that you are eating. Consumption of these chemicals will cause different reactions in different people and larger amounts can cause a worse reaction. A “dose threshold” is what we use to describe the amount of chemicals that cause certain symptoms. Some individuals have a high dose threshold when it comes to food chemicals and could have no symptoms at all after eating foods.

Which chemicals in foods can cause intolerances?

Chemicals in foods that cause intolerances can be naturally found and additives. Some examples of the natural chemicals that reside in certain foods that are known to cause intolerances include:

  • Salicylates
  • Amines
  • Glutamates

Some examples of food chemicals that have been added to artificially include:

  • Artificial food colours
  • Preservatives
  • Flavour enhancers
What happens is I have a low dose threshold for chemicals in food?

If you have a low dose threshold for one or multiple food chemicals, you will almost certainly experience some unpleasant symptoms. It is similar to when an individual has an intolerance to certain medications and experiences side effects.

Are food intolerances genetic?

It is very common for food intolerances to run in the family. If you are experiencing certain reactions to food and you have not determined the cause, it may be wise to start with any foods that your blood relatives have intolerances for.

Why do I only get a reaction to certain foods sometimes?

This is all to do with your dose threshold. The chemical that causes a reaction in one food, may also be prevalent in another food. For example, one day, you may eat one kind of food with a specific chemical and get no reaction. The next day, you eat the same piece of food, plus, another different piece of food with the same chemical inside. After this you get a reaction.

It is understandable to be confused and you may think it was just the second piece of food that was causing you harm. In fact, it was the consumption of 2 servings of the same chemical that caused your intolerance. This is due to the amount of one certain chemical consumed.
