What is Diabetes?

When an individual develops diabetes, their body struggles to maintain a healthy glucose level in the blood. Glucose is the main source of energy that our bodies use and is a type of sugar. When you have an unhealthy amount of glucose in your blood, this can lead to short and long term health problems.

Sugars from our food are converted in glucose. This transformation is needed in order to our bodies to then turn the glucose into energy. Insulin is the hormone that converts glucose into energy for us to use. For someone with diabetes, the insulin in their body is not produced efficiently or at all. This means, if a sufferer of diabetes eats certain foods which contain sugar or starches e.g. cereal, bread, fruit or sweets, the sugar can turn into glucose but the glucose cannot be converted into energy due to a lack of insulin. This leads to dangerous levels of glucose in the blood.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes have the same potential complications due to this high level of glucose in the blood. Some of the serious complications that can affect an individual with diabetes include stroke, heart attack, limb amputation, kidney disease, depression and more.

Diabetes Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below answers to frequently asked questions we get from our clients regarding Diabetes:

What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is the rarer of the two main diabetes types. This condition is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system mistakenly destroys the cells in your pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin. It is not clear why this autoimmune reaction happens; however, we do understand that type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented through lifestyle changes, unlike type 2 diabetes.

What is type 2 diabetes?

The significantly more common of the two main types, type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the body rejects the normal effects of insulin. Over time, the body loses the capability to produce insulin in the pancreas, leading to more detrimental problems if not treated correctly. Type 2 diabetes is strongly linked to genetics but the risk of developing the condition can be reduced through positive lifestyle changes.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Some common symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Feeling thirsty
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight loss
  • Urinating more frequently, especially at night
  • Itching around the vagina or penis
  • Wounds healing slowly
  • And more
What are the causes of diabetes?

Reducing the chance of developing type 1 diabetes cannot be improved through any lifestyle changes. Doctors are not sure why the autoimmune reaction happens that causes the condition; however, we do know that type 1 and type 2 diabetes have strong links to genetics.

On the other hand, the chances of developing type 2 diabetes have been shown to increase with negative lifestyle choices such as:

  • Lack of exercise
  • Eating unhealthily
  • Unhealthy weight gain
  • Smoking
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
