What is Cholesterol?

You may have heard people speak about “good” cholesterol and “bad” cholesterol, well, as rudimentary as these terms may seem, they do have some merit. There are two main types of cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoproteins) and HDL (high-density lipoproteins). These types of cholesterol are a mixture of protein and fat (lipids).

LDL is the type of cholesterol that people usually refer to as “bad”. This is because high levels of LDL cholesterol can lead to a build-up in your arteries. This can have serious implications on your health, potentially resulting in heart disease or stroke.

HDL is typically referred to as the “good” cholesterol because it carries the substance from certain parts of your body, back to your liver. Once arrived, your liver can remove the cholesterol from your body.
