What is Asthma?

For some individuals with asthma, it can be a slight irritant that can affect them every so often. For other people, it can affect their day to day life in a major way. Some signs general signs of asthma range from shortness of breath and chest tightness to coughing and wheezing made worse by a respiratory virus. The condition can cause trouble sleeping due to shortness of breath and a common sign in children is wheezing when exhaling.

One of the dangers of asthma is an asthma attack. Asthma attacks can be extremely serious and life-threatening. You may be able to identify an asthma attack by noticing your general asthma symptoms worsening, your reliever inhaler is not helping you control your symptoms and you feel that you cannot catch your breath.

Due to the risk of life-threatening asthma attacks, it is vital that you speak to your doctor if you feel that you are experiencing symptoms. Asthma may be diagnosed is a few different ways. Three methods that doctors may use are:

  • FeNO tests – A machine that measures how much nitric oxide is in your breath, which signifies lung inflammation.
  • Peak flow test – A device that measures how fast you are able to breath out. Over time, this can be an indicator of asthma due to fluctuations measurements and lower scores.
  • Spirometry – A machine that you blow into in order to measure the speed at which you can breathe out and the amount of air that your lungs can hold.

What are the symptoms of asthma?

The most common symptoms of asthma are usually:

  • Breathlessness
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Tightness in your chest

What are the symptoms of an asthma attack?

Asthma attacks can be life-threatening, so it is important to understand some of the signs. A few common symptoms of an asthma attack may include:

  • General asthma symptoms worsening e.g. breathlessness, wheezing, coughing or a tight chest)
  • Struggling to speak, sleep or eat
  • Your reliever inhaler is failing to help
  • Increase in speed of your breathing and struggling to catch your breath
  • Children may experience chest or stomach aches
  • And there may be other symptoms that affect you

If you feel that you are experiencing an asthma attack, you should sit up straight, try to stay calm and call your emergency services number. If you have been advised to use your reliever inhaler, you should do so as per the instructions given by your doctor.

What can trigger asthma?

Some examples of asthma triggers include:

  • Exercise
  • Allergies such as pollen or animal fur)
  • Cold and flu
  • Pollution
  • Cold air
  • Smoke

Most people will be able to at least somewhat combat these triggers with treatment.

How long does asthma last?

For lots of people, asthma is a long-term condition. This is especially true if you develop the condition when you are an adult. When developed as a child, sometimes asthma can go away during adolescence and return later in life.

Fortunately, most people with asthma will be able to continue to have normal, active lives, especially with treatment. It is possible that some may experience more severe problems.
