Alzheimer’s disease is one of many types of dementia that affects how you behave, the way you think and your memory. Over time, your symptoms can become severe enough to affect your daily routine and everyday tasks. Many people incorrectly consider Alzheimer’s to be a normal part of the aging process; however, this is not the case.

What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Out of the various forms of dementia, Alzheimer’s is the most common with the disease accounting for between 60-80% of all dementia cases. It is a broad term for the loss of memory and other cognitive abilities that can seriously affect your day to day life.

As mentioned above, it is often perceived that Alzheimer’s is “just part of getting older”; yet this is not true. Whilst aging is the biggest risk factor and the vast majority of sufferers are over-65, the disease can affect people under-65. In this case, it is often referred to as early-onset or younger-onset Alzheimer’s and those affected can be at any stage of the disease.

Sadly, there is no definitive cure for Alzheimer’s; however, mainstream medicine does offer aducanumab. This therapy involves the removal of amyloid, one of the main contributors of the disease. This removal shows signs that it may be likely to reduce cognitive decline in people with early Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer's Disease Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below answers to frequently asked questions we get from our clients regarding Alzheimer's Disease:

What are the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Often, Alzheimer’s is first suspected through difficulty remembering newly learned news or information. This may be followed by a variety of other symptoms such as:

  • Loss of spontaneity
  • Repeating questions or sentences
  • Difficulty handling money
  • Getting lost or wandering
  • Misplacing items
  • Poor judgement in certain situations
What happens to the brain during Alzheimer’s?

Before any signs of memory loss, there are microscopic changes that happen in the brain. For our cognitive and functional capability to work efficiently, the nerve cells in our brain must be able to communicate with each other. These nerve cells are responsible for all sorts of different jobs from thinking and remembering to hearing and smelling.

Scientists believe that Alzheimer’s disease stops part of the brain cells from working correctly. It is not yet known exactly how this begins; however, the damage to the brain cells eventually spreads and cells start to lose their ability to do their jobs correctly. After a while, these cells die and cause changes in the brain which are irreversible.

How long do people usually live with Alzheimer’s Disease?

On average, people live between 4-8 years after their initial diagnosis; however, it is possible to live up to 20 years after your initial onset.

Do Alzheimer’s patients sleep a lot?

People living with Alzheimer’s disease often sleep a lot during the day, even if they have had a full night’s sleep. This is due to key brain cells dying which may cause a lack of energy.
